Yes, it is possible to earn really well from online writing sites, whether they use AdSense payment model or a revenue sharing payment model. Being a freelancer has a lot of benefits, but you only get paid once. That's why a lot of people like writing for non-marketplace online writing sites - they are attracted by the prospect of earning residual income. Here is a list of the best online writing websites that allow you to earn residual income.
1. Knoji
Previously known as Factoidz, Knoji is an online writing website that offers writer earn in a number of different ways and earn well. For a start, it's a revenue share website that pays you for the number of unique views your articles get. The more views there are, the more you earn. The payrate is different for different articles, as it depends on the subject (some rank higher than other) and on your content's SEO rank. The higher the payout rate and the SEO rank, the better you earn. For example, subjects like biographies have a low payout rank, while subjects like personal finance and computers have a high payout rate.
In addition to revenue share, Knoji encourages writers to write paid product reviews. You can reserve a product review to complete it within 72 hours. Knoji pays up to $10 per review upfront and then you continue to earn residual income on your reviews. There is also a contextual links Beta program, which enables you to earn from $1 to $15 for posting contextual links to Knoji on other websites. All in all, Knoji is a good online writing website with good earning potentials. You can join Knoji here. Remember that Knoji is a knowlege-focused website, so they welcome informative articles. Payments are made via PayPal and there is no minimum payout.
2. Wizzley
Wizzley is a relatively new site, but it's definitely worth checking out. HubPages users will be familiar with it from the very start, as Wizzley uses the same capsule design. The only difference is that Wizzley gives you a lot more flexibility, a lot more design options, and a greater earning potential.
Wizzley encourages users to create informative pages rather than articles. Each page can have its own background and fonts design, have a table of contents and a bunch of other stuff including videos and, of course, affiliate links. So how can you earn on Wizzley? Well, there are countless options:
- AdSense revenue share
- Amazon affiliate program
- Chitika (if you'd rather not use AdSense)
- VigLink that affiliates all your links
- AllPosters.com affiliate program
- Zazzle.com affiliate program

3. Helium
Helium is another revenue share online writing website that has a decent earnings potential. It used to be my favourite website, but the recent changes on Helium didn't do it any favours. For example, they've gotten rid of Marketplace, where I used to win assignments earning $100+ per article. Now it's gone. But Helium is still a decent source of residual income. True, it has a weird rating system (people write articles to the same title and then users rate them), but the fact that they pay per unique pageviews make it worthwhile. On top of that, there are article assignments paying something like $3-$4 per article plus lifetime revenue share. All in all, not too bad. The minimum payout is $25 and they pay through PayPal.
4. Suite101
Another website that pays residual income to online writers. They pay per click rather than per unique view, which means that you have to write articles that will make people click. The website suffered greatly from Google Panda, but now it's regenerating and has a decent potential to provide residual income. The minimum payout is $5 and they pay via PayPal.
5. HubPages
Despite being last on my list, HubPages is one of my favourite online writing websites. The reason is simple - it's the most versatile and interactive. If you are smart, the earning potential is great thanks to the amount of affiliate programs you can participate in. Just think of it - Google AdSense, HubPages Ad Program, Amazon Associate Program, eBay. No other online writing website offers such an array of partners. Neither does any other website provide all the cool content options, such as polls, slideshows, videos, quizzes, etc. The money varies depending on your SEO skills and affiliate marketing skills, but the potential is truly great.
Naturally, there are other online writing websites where you can earn residual income. Keep in mind that I didn't mention websites that are open only for US residents, as I'm not one myself. Thanks for the tips; I hadn't heard of Bukisa before. Wizzley and Squidoo are the top-paying sites where I or writers I know seem to draw a solid income. I suspect that to some extent it has to do with familiarizing yourself with what works on each website (as well as, of course, having some solid content).

These are some of the best sites of their kind. I used to write a lot for Helium, but I don't like it as much as HP. I'e investigated most of them over the years.
These sites have their plus sides, decent earnings can be made, if you know how. However, my must bare in mind that they are still content farms, plain and simple. This is usually seen as a very negative thing by most people. But for those that write extremely good quality content, which is one of the main keys to success when trying to earn money from web content, well run content farms work quite well.

The vote is not fair. Everyone reading this is on HubPages and if they are like me, they do not know much about the others. lol
Anyway, I voted for HubPages and then looked and found that I was part of the herd with a few exceptions. The only other site that I post on is Squidoo and they were not on the list, but I would still have voted for HubPages.

I have enjoyed my time at HubPages. This is where I started. I keep meaning to write on Squidoo, but just don't seem to have the time.
I like the community here, and try to do my part in participating rather than just writing. That all takes time. So what little time I do have left I generally spend behind a camera. Hobbies are time consuming :)
